About the Guild

The Storytelling Guild celebrates the art and traditions of oral storytelling. The Guild aims to be the definitive source of information regarding storytelling in WA and we are happy to promote all oral storytelling events through this website and our email list. Our stories come from many cultures and include traditional folktales, family and personal stories, humorous tales and anecdotes, urban myths, sacred stories from different traditions and tall tales.

Each year the guild helps to coordinate tellers for a number of public events - performances and workshops - to schools, libraries, church groups and community organisations. We also actively participate in local and national festivals and represent the WA storytelling community at national and international functions

The Aims of the Guild Are:
  1. to promote oral storytelling in the wider community by bringing together people from all sections of society to share experiences and stories;
  2. to encourage and advocate storytelling as an integral part of school, library and community life;
  3. to support the development of the art and craft of oral storytelling among members and associates;
  4. to assist individuals or groups to develop their own storytelling skills and styles;
  5. to act as a centre and information exchange for individuals or groups involved or associated with oral storytelling who seek advice and guidance in oral storytelling;
  6. to liaise and cooperate with other organisations which possess similar or related objectives and purposes;
  7. to coordinate storytelling activities within the state of Western Australia;
  8. to maintain links with oral storytelling organisations in other States and Territories within Australia and overseas; and actively encourage visiting interstate and overseas storytellers to share in the life of the local guild.
